Sending Freight - Custom Container Solutions

Posted on 27 June 2012

The Freight Problem?

Mainfreight were approached to extend some of our supply chain solution expertise around what had to date proved a difficult and costly exercise for this business in sending freight.

This project based company manufacture custom made outdoor architectural fittings, and often “outdoor architectural fittings” aren’t typically matched with the ‘pallets of freight’ often associated with sending freight.

Freight Customised Container Our Solution

When approached to assist, both our Auckland based Sales Manager and our Special Projects Coordinator put their heads together to come up with a simple solution to what had become a challenge for this customer in sending freight.

  • We visited the site to view the freight and to understand their past experiences and challenges they had experienced with sending freight
  • The Mainfreight team concluded the best way to move forward in sending freight such as this, would be to supply a somewhat less-than-usual side-opening 20ft container.  This side-opening 20ft container was sourced through our domestic network while cartage was organised by Mainfreight’s specialist container cartage team
  • Having a “chippy” on site we provided a tailor-made solution for this customer’s unusual dimension long freight, and worked together find a solution which matched this freight profile perfectly
  • The movement of this container was easily arranged by the Mainfreight team, including rail to Timaru, followed by swinglift into Geraldine.  With the empty pick up arranged for a specified time in the future, this customer had little more to worry about than closing the doors on the container

The Result!

Freight Solutions for Long FreightMainfreight sourced the container and utilised the most cost effective method of transport through each step of the supply chain, while our customer increased their margin on the goods they had sold.

The customer’s feedback upon completion was simply “should we do it all again, we wouldn’t change a thing – it was seamless”.

Another happy Mainfreight customer.
